Scripture: Linger over Colossians 1:15-23.

God is invisible, a fact that frustrates and tests all people. That a supernatural, intelligent, all-powerful Person is the Creator should be obvious to all, yet it remains hidden (Rom. 1:20f).

That Jesus Christ “is the image of the invisible God” is a game-changer, even an age-changer! Nothing was ever the same after His birth. All over the world, time is measured with respect to His coming.

What does it mean that Jesus is the image of God? First, it means that He is by nature God: possessing all wisdom, power, strength, holiness. He is the eternal, uncreated Creator and “in Him was life.” Yet He voluntarily “emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant being made in the likeness of men” (Phil. 2:7).

God’s passion to have His people be with Him, in spite of their sin, was expressed by sending His Son to reveal Himself to us. He was and is a Man, tempted in every way we are yet without sin (Heb. 4:15). The invisible God became visible for us. People touched Him, heard Him teach, saw Him respond to life situations, and ate with Him. The writer of Hebrews says that the Son “is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature” (Heb. 1:3).

God wants you to know Him. Increasingly. For this reason Christ includes you in His Sonship relationship with the Father. It is a reunion.
