Scripture: Read Colossians 1:24-2:5.

Paul refers several times to “the mystery.” Let’s be sure we understand what he means by this word. Remember, Christ is the image of the invisible God. Now something that was hinted at by the prophets is revealed, and Paul wants you to know it isn’t a mystery; it is the mystery.

The mystery takes us beyond the truths of the gospel to the result: Christ lives in you, and this is “the hope of glory.” The fact that the Spirit of Christ literally lives in you is your guarantee of being “holy and blameless...before Him.” This is your personal destiny.

Check out Paul’s passion: to “present everyone mature in Christ.” This isn’t a passion only belonging to pastors; this is a passion that every member of the Body of Christ can have. It’s in seeing the potential beauty in one another and contending for each person’s growth that makes us the Church. Paul wants us all to be willing to work hard to help others grow.

The gospel received qualifies us to share in the inheritance of His people. It delivers us from the domain of darkness and transfers us into the kingdom of His beloved Son (Col. 1:12-13).

But we also live every day in this same gospel. Paul illustrates this with these words, “For this I toil, struggling with all His energy that He powerfully works within me” (Col. 1:29). You have a calling. You have a mission. You have a stewardship. But the ability to fulfill His calling is the daily experience of Christ in you. Jesus said, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing” (Jn. 15:5). We may work hard, but we get our ability from depending entirely upon Christ. We abide in Him.
