Scripture: Read Col 1.

What is Paul’s main point? This letter to you is filled with many points, so it’s important to step back and ask, “Okay, but what is the one point that unlocks all the others?” The main point is the gospel—getting it right. Everything hangs upon realizing who Jesus really is. Paul calls this “the word of truth” (Col 1:5).

Speaking of the Son, “He is the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15). John describes Jesus as eternally existing…yet becoming a man. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us…” (Jn 1:1,14). Matthew describes Jesus as, “Immanuel…God with us” (Mt 1:23). Jesus made His divinity clear when He corrected Philip, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father…” (Jn 14:9).

It is the fact that God originally created Adam (man) in His own image that made it possible for the Son of God to become a man. It was as the Son of Man that He conquered Satan, sin, and death.

Some have struggled with Jesus as “the firstborn of all creation,” thinking that it suggests He was created. The noted scholar F.F. Bruce prefers to translate this as “the firstborn before creation.” He is being depicted as the firstborn son who is over all the father’s estate because of His preeminent position over all creation. This is a title like “Ruler of all creation.” Paul knows the new believers at Colossae are facing many “New Age” type claims, so it’s important to drill down into what is being said about Jesus.

What do you learn about who Jesus really is in Col 1:15-20?
